Athlete Leadership

The Athlete Leadership initiative by Special Olympics empowers individuals with intellectual disabilities to become leaders and advocates within the movement and beyond. Through this program, athletes are given opportunities to develop leadership skills, gain confidence, and take on meaningful roles—as spokespersons, coaches, event planners, board members, and mentors.

By participating in structured training sessions and receiving mentorship, Athlete Leaders learn to express their opinions, influence decision-making, and represent the voice of people with intellectual disabilities in their communities. The initiative reinforces the belief that when given the opportunity, individuals with intellectual disabilities can lead, inspire others, and help shape a more inclusive world.

If we want a more inclusive organization and accepting world, Special Olympics athletes must be allowed to contribute in ways beyond the sports field. One of the most powerful ways we do this is through Athlete Leadership, which creates opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to develop and demonstrate their abilities in leadership roles.
